In full: "You were most thoughtful and kind to send me the very beautiful tie which I am glad to have./ I hope the family and you had a very nice Christmas, and the New Year will bring you an abundance of all things good./ With warm regards/. Sincerely". Louis B. Nichols (1906-1977) was assistant director of the F.B.I. for several decades. After receiving his law degree from George Washington University in 1934, he joined the F.B.I. the very same year. No. 3 under J. Edgar Hoover and Clyde. A. Tolson, Nichols oversaw the bureau's records and communications and was known as the F.B.I.'s public relations man during his long tenure, which lasted until 1957. Nichols went on to work for Schenley Industries, retiring as executive vice president in 1969. Two horizontal mailing folds. Lightly toned. Staining/shading at lower right-hand corner.
