In response to your inquiry regarding the Ku Klux Klan, information contained in our files must be maintained as confidential in accordance with regulations of the Department of Justice. I am sure you will understand the reason for this policy and why I am unable to furnish the data requested regarding this organization. The January, 1966, issue of the 'Reader's Digest' contains an article on pages 87 through 92 entitled 'The FBI's Secret War Against the Ku Klux Klan' by John Barron. In addition, 'The FBI Story,' a book written by Don Whitehead, contains some information regarding this group. [A copy autographed by Hoover is lot 191]. Copies of these publications may be available at your school or local library." J. Edgar Hoover served as the first Director of the FBI from 1924 until his death in 1972. During his 48-year term, he restored order to the department and established the world's largest fingerprint file and the FBI Academy. The FBI fought organized crime in the Prohibition era. Under his direction, the FBI also infiltrated the American Communist Party, the Ku Klux Klan and other subversive organizations. It also conducted counterintelligence during World War II and the Cold War. By the 1970s, Hoover came under frequent public criticism for his authoritarian administration, but his power was so great that no President dared to remove him. ¼-inch stain at blank fold.
