Houston, Texas, 1981 January 5. On imprinted letterhead depicting the logo of Apollo 17 to comedienne and actress Phyllis Diller. Begins: "Dear Phyllis". In full: "Unfortunately, because I was out of town throughout most of the holidays, I did not receive your party invitation until it was too late to respond. I thank you for thinking of me and I really missed joining in all the fun. I hope your Christmas was a blessed one and that the New Year holds everything special for you." With original typed mailing envelope. Ten months after he signed this letter, Cernan founded his own company, The Cernan Corporation, to pursue interests in the energy, aerospace and other related industries. Gene Cernan (1934-2017) was one of 14 astronauts selected by NASA in October 1963. He was the Pilot of Gemini 9 (1966), which failed to dock with a target vehicle, and the Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 10 (1969), which evaluated the Lunar Module's performance in the lunar environment, descending to within ten miles of the moon's surface. As Commander of Apollo 17 (1972), he was the last man to walk on the Moon, spending over 73 hours on the lunar surface. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature.
