JOHN M. MURTAGH New York State Chief Justice types a letter to a friend thanking him for his kind letter Typed Letter signed: "John", in blue ink, 1p, 8½x11. To "Dear Rush". In full: "Many thanks for your kind letter of July 13th. It was thoughtful of you to write. I trust you will drop in again when you are in the neighborhood./ With kindest personal regards, I am/ Sincerely yours". John Murtagh served as Chief Justice for the Court of Special Sessions for the City of New York. During his tenure, he exhibited a progressive attitude toward social problems and their legal ramifications. Advocating compassion over legal punishment, Murtagh became something of an activist for the homeless. He was involved in establishing the Hart Island program and the Homeless Men's Court in the 1940s-1950s. Signer merits further research. Faint horizontal creases. Lightly toned.
