Written on official Vice Presidential letterhead. Washington, D.C. April 15, 1982. Addressed to Mr. Lee Kramer of Great Neck, New York. In full: "One of the nicest things about being the Vice President is hearing from the young people of our country. Your confusing in deciding which candidate is best is not unusual. There are often several good people running for the same office. I can only suggest that you gather as much information about each candidate as you can, including voting records, philosophy, stands on issues, etc. decide which party more nearly reflects your beliefs; then vote for the person whose philosophy, character, party affiliation and leadership qualifications coincide with your standards. It is not always an easy process, but how great that we have the freedom to choose. Thank you for your letter and your interest. Sincerely". George H.W. Bush, born in Milton, Massachusetts in 1924, was Ronald Reagan's Vice President (1981-1989) before serving as 41st U.S. President (1989-1993), the first incumbent Vice President to be elected President since 1836. Bush's distinguished resume included oil company executive, Texas Congressman, Chairman of the Republican Party, Director of Central Intelligence, Ambassador to China and Ambassador to the United Nations. As President he conducted a largely successful foreign policy, including the first Gulf War against Iraq, Operation Desert Storm, and the 1989 invasion of Panama to depose General Manuel Noriega.
