MICHAEL CHEKHOV Oscar-nominated actor Michael Chekhov signed this typed letter, addressed to concert pianist Yolanda Mero-Irion, in 1935 to thank her for giving someone an audition. Typed letter signed "Michel Chekhov". 1 page, 6x9½ , on stationery of the Cambridge of New York City. June 4, 1935. Addressed to Mrs. Yolanda Mero-Irion, New York City. In full: "Dear Mrs. Mero-Irion: I wish to thank you very much for the audition you gave Mr. Michel Michon. It was so kind of you to let him have this opportunity. There is a possibility that Mrs. Chekhov and I stay here for a little while during next winter and so we hope to have the pleasure of meeting you. With all our best regard, most sincerely yours,". YOLANDA-MERO IRION (1887-1963) was a Hungarian concert pianist and co-founder of the New Opera Company, which produced 10 operettas, comedies and ballets on Broadway between 1941 and 1947. MICHEL MICHON had a total of two performing credits on Broadway in the early 1940s. MICHAEL CHEKHOV (1891-1955) was the nephew of playwright Anton Chekhov and a formidable artist in his own right, earning an Oscar nod for his performance in Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound (1945). Chekhov was a student of Constantin Stanislavski and his acting system, a forerunner of method acting. He broke with Stanislavski after Russia's October Revolution of 1917 and, in 1928, left Russia for Europe proper (because his productions in his homeland were labeled "alien and reactionary") and then the United States. Chekhov was a brilliant actor but had few credits outside Russia, including had 4 producing and directing credits on Broadway between 1935 and 1942 and over 20 film appearances (mostly in Russian productions) between 1913 and 1954.
