Addressed to: "Mr. John P. Allen Scarsdale, New York" In full: "My dear Mr. Allen:- On my arrival home, I fould (sic) your note of resignation from the Diaconate of our Church, and I took the liberty of holding it back from our Deacon's meeting last evening, because, in the first place I hoped you would be able to reconsider, and in the second place, because the annual meeting comes in about six weeks, and I thought if the resignation must come, it would be better to have the place filled at that time. I cannot tell you how earnestly I hope that you may be able to hold the position for a while, even if you cannot be regularly present with us. Your judgment and help are of the very greatest value, as witnessed by your splendid work regarding the supplies this last Summer. Two of our fine men will rotate out of office in December, and their places must be filled. Of course, I am anxious to keep my Board just as strong as possible, so if you can let the matter rest a little, it will be a great favor, while we are all hoping that some good fortune will bring you back once more to the Clinton Avenue Church, where I know your heart is in residence. I had a good trip over the sea, and am home with new strength and courage. Mrs. Boynton joins me in very kindest regards to yourself, and Mrs. Allen.
