MICHAEL CHEKHOV and ANDRÉ SINGER Actor and director Michael Chekhov and composer André Singer signed this long typed letter, addressed to Yolanda Mero-Irion, in 1942. It was written while Chekhov was directing Mussorgsky's The Fair at Sorochinsk for Mero-Irion's New Opera Company - a production fraught with serious problems, which this letter tried to address. Typed letter signed "Michael Chekhov." and "André Singer". Red pencil notations in unknown hand near top right corner of page 1. 2 pages, 8½x11, single-sided pages. Chekhov Theatre Studio, New York City, Oct. 11, 1942. In full: "Dear Mrs. Irion: I think that after our short talk during tonight's rehearsal and considering also the condition under which the rehearsal itself had to take place, the time has come when a clarification of my relations with the New Opera Company becomes an absolute necessity. I would like to call to you attention certain point, without trying to interpret them, because I believe that by stating a few facts you will be led to the same conclusions which I have arrived at. I was invited to stage an opera for you which did not exist at that time, and even at the time of writing this letter neither Mr. Signer nor have a complete work at our disposal to stage, nor do we have a complete cast. You will remember that, after numerous attempts on my part,(even since September 15th), to through the office of the New Opera Company a rehearsal scheduled at which everyone concerned would be present, my first 'complete' rehearsal was finally only arranged for October 8th. You will undoubtedly agree with me that under such circumstances one cannot very well contend that I have started late with my work.
