J. EDGAR HOOVER Hoover signed this typed letter on FBI letterhead in 1949. He sent it to Robert T. Martin at The World Almanac approving an entry on the FBI. But Hoover did make one correction to the article: the FBI had over 100 million fingerprint cards at that time. Typed letter signed "J. Edgar Hoover" in blue ink, 1 page, 8x10¼, on letterhead of the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, United States Department of Justice, Washington, DC. June 8, 1949. Addressed to Robert T. Martin, The World Almanac, New York City. In full: "Dear Mr. Martin: The attached statement [not included] concerning the Federal Bureau of Investigation to be used in the forthcoming edition of the World Almanac has been reviewed and is considered satisfactory. It is pointed out, however, that as of June 1, 1949, 111,838,490 fingerprint cards were on file in the FBI Identification Division. I appreciate your courtesy in allowing us to peruse this statement which is being re-turned herewith pursuant to your request. Sincerely yours, Enclosure". Hoover (1895-1972, born John Edgar Hoover in Washington, DC) served as the first Director of the FBI from 1924 until his death in 1972. During his 48-year term, he restored order to the department and established the world's largest fingerprint file and the FBI Academy. The FBI fought organized crime in the Prohibition era. Under his direction, the FBI also infiltrated the American Communist Party, the Ku Klux Klan and other subversive organizations. It also conducted counterintelligence during WWII and the Cold War. By the 1970s, Hoover came under frequent public criticism for his authoritarian administration, but his power was so great that no President dared to remove him. Lightly toned and creased.
