J. EDGAR HOOVER This letter, signed by Hoover, was sent to NBC in 1941 exactly two weeks after the United States declared war on Japan. It accompanied 750 employee fingerprint cards, which NBC used to screen its employees and applicants for criminal records. Accompanied by a carbon copy of NBC's request for these cards. Typed letter signed "J.E. Hoover" as Director, Federal Bureau of Investigation in blue ink. 1 page, 7¾x10¼, on Hoover's letterhead as Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, United Stated Department of Justice, Washington, DC. December 22, 1941. Addressed to Mr. J. F. Whalley, Business Manager, National Broadcasting Company, Incorporated, Merchandise Mart, Chicago, Illinois. With notes in pencil by Whalley near lower left margin initialed "JFW." In full: "Dear Mr. Whalley: With reference to the request contained in your communication of December 13, 1941, I am pleased to forward to you, under separate cover, seven hundred fifty National Defense Applicant fingerprint cards [not included], together with thirty-five self-addressed penalty envelopes [not included] which require no postage. These supplies are furnished for your convenience in referring the fingerprint records of the employees of your company to the Identification Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Your full cooperation in supplying all of the data requested on the National Defense Applicant finger-print forms is earnestly solicited, as this information is essential in the maintenance of the Bureau's identification files. For your information, fingerprints of employees submitted to this Bureau by industrial concerns engaged in National Defense projects are searched against the main fingerprint files and in the event any criminal history is disclosed, it is communicated to the War and Navy Depart-ments.
