ELIJAH MUHAMMAD The leader of the Nation of Islam writes to Brother Roy X. Munford at his New Jersey temple regarding an account due to the "Pittsburgh Courier". The "Messenger of Allah" is being annoyed by writings and callings and wishes to know when the account will be settled. TLS: "Elijah Muhammad" as Messenger of Allah, 1p, 8½x11. Chicago, Illinois, 1958 January 30. To Brother Roy X. Munford, Newark, New Jersey. Headed: "As-Salaam-Alaikum: In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful; Master of the Day of Requital. To Him do I submit and seek refuge." Begins: "Dear Brother". In full: "You owe the Pittsburgh Courier office $294.00 from November 20, 1957 to January 4th of this year. How soon will you be able to take care of this account? The office is annoying me with writings and callings. As-Salaam-Alaikum: Your brother". Elijah Muhammad (1897-1975), born Elijah Poole, led the Black separatist religious movement known as the Nation of Islam. The son of sharecroppers and former slaves, in 1923 Muhammad moved to Detroit where, around 1930, he became assistant minister to the founder of the sect, Wallace D. Fard, at Temple No. 1. When Fard disappeared in 1934, Muhammad succeeded him as head of the movement, with the title "Minister of Islam". Because of dissension within the Detroit temple, he moved to Chicago, where he established Temple No. 2. During WWII, Muhammad advised followers to avoid the draft, resulting in him being charged with violating the Selective Service Act and jailed (1942-1946). Muhammad slowly built up the membership of the Black Muslims. His program called for the establishment of a separate nation for Black Americans and the adoption of a religion based on the worship of Allah and the belief that Blacks are His chosen people.
