HOMER S. CUMMINGS FDR's Attorney General forwards "specimens of my handwriting" to a correspondent. TLS: "Homer Cummings" as FDR's Attorney General, 1p, 7x9¼. Washington, D.C., 1937 March 30. On embossed letterhead of The Attorney General to Miss Shirley Spencer, New York, New York. In full: "This acknowledges your recent letter. I am glad indeed to comply with your request and enclose herewith specimens of my handwriting for the use you mention. Sincerely yours". No enclosures present. Homer Stille Cummings (1870-1956) was FDR's Attorney General from 1933-1939, serving in the post longer than any other man except William Wirt (1817-1829). A former Mayor of Stamford, Connecticut (elected in 1900, 1901 and 1904), Cummings had previously chaired the Democratic National Committee (1919-1920) and served as a Connecticut State Attorney (1914-1924). After retiring from national office, he returned to the private practice of law. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature.
