BISHOP WILLIAM BACON STEVENS Handwritten, signed letter from the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese asking if the services of Reverend Moore will be required at Asylum. Extremely rare! Autograph letter signed: "Wm Bacon Stevens", in black ink, 1 page, 5x8. January 5, 1866. In full: "My dear Sir, Do you desire the Rev. Mr. Moore to officiate at the Asylum on Sunday next? If so he will hold himself in readiness to do it. If not I shall probably use his services elsewhere. Please let me know at my office tomorrow a.m. & oblige. Yours truly". The fourth Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania, William Bacon Stevens (1815-1887) practiced medicine before studying for his priesthood. He was ordained in 1843 and became a priest the next year, soon after teaching moral philosophy at the University of Georgia. Several years later, he received his Doctor of Divinity degree and was elected the assistant bishop of the Diocese of Pennsylvania, finally being promoted to Bishop of Pennsylvania upon the death of The Rt. Rev'd Alonzo Potter in 1865. He served in that position until his death in 1887. Adhesive residue on verso, showing through to front. Slight surface creases. Slightly toned.
