Peary began his Arctic exploration with voyages to Greenland in 1886 and 1891-1892. He returned to Greenland in 1893-1895, 1896 and 1897. Peary then surveyed northern routes in 1898-1902 and 1905-1906. He set out on "the proposed expedition" he mentions in July 1908. On April 6, 1909, he became the first to reach the North Pole.
