ROBERT F. KENNEDY. TLS: "Robert F Kennedy" as Attorney General, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1963 February 14. On letterhead of the Office of the Attorney General to Mrs. Betty Sobel, World Affairs Center, Westport, Connecticut. In full: "Thank you very much for your letter inviting me to participate in the second 'Birthday' celebration of the World Affairs Center. I appreciate your thinking of me and wish I could be present for the occasion. Unfortunately, however, my forthcoming schedule has already been outlined quite heavily and I cannot see my way clear to make any additional commitments at this time. It was good of you to invite me, and I hope you will express my regrets to the members of the Center." At the time of this letter, Kennedy was in the process of implementing Civil Rights legislation. The month before he signed this letter, Kennedy had argued before the U.S. Supreme Court regarding Georgia's inequitable county-unit state primary voting system. Later in the year, he would send Assistant Attorney General Burke Marshal to Birmingham, Alabama to mediate in the integration of stores and lunch counters, implement court-ordered integration of the University of Alabama and testify before congressional committees in support of new Civil Rights legislation. Robert Francis "Bobby" Kennedy (1925-1968), the younger brother of John F. Kennedy, made a name for himself as Chief Counsel of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Improper Activities in Labor or Management Field (1957-1960), investigating such labor leaders as Jimmy Hoffa. He left the office to successfully manage his brother John's successful presidential campaign in 1960. Named as his brother's Attorney General in 1961, Robert worked closely with JFK on such critical issues as the Bay of Pigs invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Civil Rights movement.
