Description
MELVIN H. PURVIS Melvin Purvis, the man who hunted down John Dillinger and Pretty Boy Floyd, shows his soft side in this tender letter to his wife, written while he was an Army colonel in 1944. Autograph letter signed "Melvin" in closing and "Melvin Purvis" and "Colonel Melvin Purvis" with his military serial number in return address. 1 page, 8x10½, ruled paper. Addressed from an Army Post Office in New York City, Aug. 19, 1944. In full: "Dear Roseanne, (no. 363) This will be a note to enclose a copy of a letter [not enclosed] I sent to Mr. Want in response to a letter from him I am sending it because he sent you a copy of his letter to me. Tell them I love them and want to see the so bad. I wish you knew how I want to see you. I miss you every moment. I hope I can soon. I live for that day only. I adore you." "Roseanne" is probably his wife Marie Rosanne Willcox Purvis, whom he married on 1931, while "Melvin" is probably his son Melvin Horace Purvis III (1940-1986). Purvis was a colonel in the U. S. Army during World War II. Purvis (1903-1960) became a national hero after leading the law-enforcement teams that trapped and killed notorious bank robbers John Dillinger and Charles "Pretty Boy" Floyd in 1934.
