Description
MELVIN PURVIS Melvin Purvis sends an autograph letter to his wife about mutual friends and how much he misses her. Autograph Letter Signed: "Melvin", 3p, 8x10½. Fort Custer, Michigan, 1943 August 27. To his wife, Rosanne. Purvis writes about mutual friends and how much he misses her. In part: "I long so to see you. I dreamed about you last night...I hope you are fine. I worry about you all the time. Please take care of yourself. I love you more than anyone could love anybody. I miss you. I would give anything I own to be with you now. I need so just to be near you. Tell the little boy I love him and want so badly to see him & that I shall do so soon...Please don't worry, my Rosanne, because there is no need to. Everything will be all right...." On July 22, 1934, FBI Agents, led by Melvin Purvis, shot and killed Public Enemy Number One, John Dillinger, outside a Chicago movie theatre. Purvis, director of the Chicago FBI office, also led the team of law enforcement officers who apprehended and killed Charles Arthur "Pretty Boy" Floyd that same year. Purvis, known as "Little Mel" for his stature (just under five feet tall), was reportedly forced out of his office the following year due to the jealousy of J. Edgar Hoover over Purvis' nationwide attention. He pursued careers in law and broadcasting, and served as a Captain in U.S. Army Intelligence in the European Theatre, WWII. This letter was written from camp prior to being sent overseas. In declining health by 1960, he committed suicide with the .45 automatic given him by colleagues when he left the FBI. Lightly creased. Folds, not at signature. Overall, fine condition. - Please contact us if you have any questions or require additional information. DOCUMENT 32004
