Springfield, Massachusetts, 1893 April 19. On his law office letterhead to "Herman Tucker Esq.", in full: "I have recd. card of admission to Number Five [?] Exhibition for which please accept my thanks. Yours respectfully". Massachusetts Republican Frederick Huntington Gillett (1851-1935), would be elected to the US House of Representatives later in the year he wrote this letter, serving from 1893 to 1931, serving as Speaker from 1919 to 1925. He was a low-key Speaker, in contrast to the assertive style of the previous Republican Speaker, Joe Cannon. He proposed an Anti-Polygamy Amendment to the US Constitution in 1914. He represented Massachusetts in the US Senate for one term (1925-1931). Normal mailing folds. Corners slightly worn and creased. Small tear on bottom left corner. Lightly toned.
