MELVIN H. PURVIS Former FBI investigator Melvin Purvis wrote this long and sometimes angry letter to his wife in 1944, while he was a lieutenant colonel in the Army, about family expenses and buying a house. Autograph letter signed "Melvin" in closing and "Melvin Purvis" and "Lt. Col. Melvin Purvis" with his military serial number in return address. 3 pages, 8x10½, ruled paper, single-sided sheets. Addressed from an Army Post Office in New York City, March 11, 1944. In full: "Dear Roseanne, (no. 152) In your letter of February twenty three you mentioned the matter of expense. This letter to you is for the purpose of straightening out the situation. I shall not write about it again but it seems necessary now that some facts must be faced. It is, as you say, unfortunate that I am over here and not there. It is, in more ways than one, because I am, and have been since I left, utterly miserable for every possible reason, the main being because I am away from you. The others, however relatively unimportant, have contributed their bit. You have reminded me several times about what I told you the night I left about spend-ing money, as you say for comfort. I don't need to be reminded of that or of anything else I said. I remember everything as I always do. And this is not to criticize or retract. It is just to tell you that facts must be faced and I don't see how either of us can take a side on the matter since we are both together on it. Re-minding me of words spoken and meant, does no good when our situation is obvious. And there is nothing I can do to change it while I am over here. What we have together and it should, and will have to, be guarded closely. The time will come when things will be different, but for the present we must adapt ourselves to our situation.
