SABU Consent form authorizing the Motion Picture Relief Fund to reproduce Sabu's signature and likeness for a series of stamps raising money for needy film industry veterans. The form is signed twice by Sabu, once as an autograph sample and again to grant permission. A remarkable, perfectly verified example! Document signed twice: "Sabu", 1 page, 8½x11. Los Angeles, California, 1946 August 19. Sabu grants to the Motion Picture Relief Fund, Inc., its successors and assigns, the exclusive right, until December 31, 1947 to use his name, autograph, photographic likeness, or artist's sketch of the likeness, for reproduction on engraved, embossed or printed stamps, and in stamp albums, and in connection with the advertising and exploitation of these stamps and stamp albums for sale throughout the world. Sabu (1924-1963, born Sabu Dastagir or Selar Shaik Sabu in Karapur, Mysore, India) got his start in movies after being spotted by documentary director Robert Flaherty. This led to his first movie appearance in the title role of 1937's The Elephant Boy. Sabu is best known for appearing in late Depression and World War II fantasy films that gave unemployed and war-weary Americans some needed escapism, including lush Alexander Korda productions like The Thief of Baghdad (1940) and The Jungle Book (1941) and Maria Montez cheese like Arabian Nights (1942) and Cobra Woman (1944). His career peaked during World War II and went into decline soon after, although he managed to land a starring role in the highly regarded Black Narcissus (1947). Sabu continued to act, on an off, until his death in 1963. Disney released his last film, A Tiger Walks (1964), a year after his death. The Motion Picture Relief Fund was founded in 1921 to assist ill and needy film industry veterans, as expressed in its motto: "We take care of our own."
