SAMUEL ATKINS ELIOT Unitarian preacher Samuel Atkins Eliot wrote this short letter in 1888 regarding the secretary of an unidentified society. Eliot was President of the American Unitarian Association (AUA) and led its merger with the National Conference of Churches in 1925 to form the modern AUA. Autograph letter signed "Samuel A. Eliot". 1 page, 4¼x7. June 11, 1888. Addressed to Mr. J. F. Carret. In full: "Dear Sir The treasurer of the Society at Seattle is Herman Chapin ,Esq. The money should be sent to him. Yours truly". American Unitarian preacher Eliot (1862-1950) was President of the American Unitarian Association (AUA) from 1900 to 1927 and led the merger of the AUA with National Conference of Churches to form the modern AUA. Eliot graduated from Harvard College in 1884 and Harvard Divinity School in 1889 and served Unitarian parishes in Denver, Colorado, where he founded the Rocky Mountain Conference of the AUA, as well in Brooklyn, New York and Boston, Massachusetts. Before being made president of the AUA, he was made secretary of that association in 1898. Eliot was the son of Harvard President Charles William Eliot and the grandson of politician Samuel Atkins Eliot. Lightly toned and creased. Mounting remnants in corners (do not touch signature).
