SAMUEL K. LOTHROP The New England clergyman responds to a newspaper article from The Boston Daily Journal in this signed letter Autograph Letter Signed: "S.K. Lothrop" 7¼x9 letter written on 2 pages, front and back, in black ink. Includes a detailed testimony of a trip to Baltimore, in contrary to what the newspaper reported. The letter to the editor is dated May 18, 1861. This letter is most likely in reference to the Baltimore Riots from April to May, 1861, that were some of the first casualties of the Civil War. In Part: "In an article in your paper, headed "Baltimore," [illegible] I believe nearly a fortnight since, but which I never saw till two days ago, after some general observation... I was in Baltimore from the 14th to the 23rd of April. Date on Saturday Evening, April 20th, I learned that some of the wounded Massachusetts troops were at the house of Mrs. T---, who I as informed lived somewhere near..." Samuel K. Lothrop (1804-1886) was a New England clergyman and author who was the pastor of Brattle Square Church. Mailing creases. Worn on verso. Marking on top left corner of first page.
