SAMUEL L. CLEMENS (MARK TWAIN) Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain) sends an autograph letter of regret that he was not able to say good-bye to Francis Henry Skrine. Autograph Letter Signed: "S.L. Clemens", 2p, 4¼x3½. No place, July 1. To Mr. Skrine. In full: "Alas, we shall then be far out on the briny deep, & between this & then I see no chance for us to get together, on account of interesting engagements; but we shall be back by October, & then we shan't have any difficulty about managing it. We were hoping to catch you at home today & say good-bye, but luck was against us - you were out. Till October - good-bye." Francis Henry Skrine (1847-1933) was an author and Indian Civil Servant and may have met Mark Twain in India. The two became good friends and correspondents. Lightly soiled.
