J. Card. Suenens/Easter 1972". B/w, 8x5¾. Belgian Catholic prelate Leo Jozef Suenens (1904-1996) entered the priesthood in 1927. After service as a chaplain in the Belgian army in 1940, he became Monsignor of the Catholic University of Louvain, and liberated by Allied troops before his scheduled execution by the Nazis. He was Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussel (all of Belgium) from 1962 to 1979. A strong supporter of the reforms of Pope John XXIII, who made him a Cardinal in 1962, Suenens was a major advocate of the reformist agenda promoted by the Pope at the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). He is said to have advised Pope Paul VI against issuing the Humanae Vitae (1968), an encyclical reaffirming the Church's traditional views on sex and marriage. One vertical fold. Lightly creased.
