Thomas Cardinal Tien (Tien Ken-hsin, 1890-1967) became the first Chinese cardinal and the first Archbishop of Beijing, both in 1946. Leaving China after the communist takeover in 1949, he resided for more than a decade in a seminary in the US. Pope Pius XII, reportedly irked that Cardinal Tien had left his post, gave him no new assignments. However, Pope John XXIII, worried that the People's Republic was establishing its own Catholic hierarchy in China, made him Apostolic Administrator for Taiwan. Tien said he avoided returning to the mainland because this would have increased persecution of Catholics. He was buried in Taipei.
