Ink note (unknown hand) in lower left: "Jan 2nd 1900." American soprano Alice Nielsen (1876-1943) was a light opera star of the 1890s, performing works of Gilbert & Sullivan and of Victor Herbert. Her greatest success in this genre came after she formed her own company and produced The Fortune Teller (1898), one of 3 operettas composed especially for her by Victor Herbert. In the 20th century she turned with equal success to grand opera, performing works of Mozart and Puccini with Caruso in Covent Garden, the Metropolitan, and other venues.
