On his letterhead as judge of the Third US Circuit Court to Martin Taylor, New York. In full: "I am more than obliged to you for sending me a copy of Professor Shepard's hymn. I am so glad you had the Centennial Hymn perpetuated in this delightful way. Some time we ought to have 'Neath the Elms' put in that shape also. I take pleasure in sending to you herewith a pamphlet I have prepared on Magna Carta [Item not included.] with reference to one of the stones in the chapel. If you should happen to attend the dinner of the Patient Bar Association in New York, be sure to make yourself known to me. Very cordially and gratefully yours". Federal judge Joseph Buffington (1857-1947) was appointed to the US District Court for Western Pennsylvania by President Harrison in 1892, and to the Circuit Court by President Roosevelt in 1906. He was senior judge of this Court for many years. Buffington took senior status (on half pay) in 1938 and heard no more cases after it was learned that he had signed opinions written by fellow judge John Warren Davis, the recipient of bribes. Whig Congressman and territorial judge Joseph Buffington (1803-1872) was his uncle. Two holes at left edge from hole-punch. 1 horizontal fold crease through center.
