Lawrence Cardinal Shehan (1905-1984) was Bishop of Bridgeport (Connecticut) 1953-1961, before becoming Archbishop of Baltimore, his native city (1951-1984). Before assuming these posts, he had headed Catholic Charities of America. He issued a pastoral letter, Racial Justice (1963), and defied threats of violence to testify in favor of an open housing ordinance that same year. He wrote an autobiography, A Blessing of Years.
