Inner diameter is measured in a straight line across the inside of the ring. Captive rings are also known as ball closure rings. The ball is held in by pressure and hoop must be opened slightly to get ball out. Some of the heavier gauge captive rings (14 gauge and higher) may require captive ring pliers to get them opened to remove the ball.
