He was selected as one of the original 7 NASA astronauts for the Mercury program in 1959. He was the second American to orbit the Earth (May 24, 1962), after John Glenn, who is the only other surviving member of the original seven. Carpenter then went from astronaut to aquanaut, spending 28 days on the ocean floor in SEALAB II. No bottom margin.
