Description
MELVILLE CANE. ALS: "Melville Cane", 2p, 8½x7, front and verso. New York City, 1957 October 25. On letterhead of Ernst, Cane & Berner Counsellors at Law to "Dear Miss Maxon". In full: "To answer your letter I would say that the only biographical piece on my writing & personality was an article by Henry Morton Robinson, the novelist, for the University of Kansas City Review, Spring issue 1951. Obviously this doesn't take in the past seven years during which I published 'Making A Poem,' Harcourt, Brace & Co, 1953, a series of papers on the creative process, and 'And Pastures New', my collected poems, HB&Co. 1956. The Robinson article deals only with my poetry. In addition I've written a number of essays & even a few pieces of fiction. I regret not being able to remember your earlier letters to me; they probably are no longer around. I wish you success with your novel, - has Avon taking it? - and I am grateful for your interest. Faithfully". Cane served on the Board of Directors for Harcourt Brace Janovich Inc. Melville Cane (1879-1980), who began his legal practice in New York in 1905, joined the law firm, Ernst, Cane and Berner and was primarily with the firm until his death. His special area of practice was copyright law. Cane served as legal counsel to such noted authors as Sinclair Lewis, Thomas Wolfe, Upton Sinclair and William Saroyan. He was also a published poet (Cane was awarded the Frost Medal for lifetime achievement by the Poetry Society of America in 1971) as well as the author of several other works, as mentioned in this letter. These include January Garden (1926), Behind Dark Places (1930) and Snow Towards Evening (1974). Lightly creased with folds, vertical fold at the "e" in Cane. Slightly soiled on signature side, which has pencil notes (unknown hand) at lower margin. Fine condition. - Please contact us if you have any questions or require additional information.
