Gregory was born on May 14, 1957 in Lockport, New York. A graduate of the USAF Academy, Columbia University and Troy State, he served as an operational fighter pilot for the F-111 from 1981 to 1986. From 1988-1990 he test piloted the F-4, A-7D and F-15 models at Edwards Air Force Base. With 3,000 hours of flight time, he was selected by NASA in 1990 and became an astronaut in 1991. Gregory piloted STS-67, an astronomical research mission aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1995. His awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the 1996 Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
