O'Sullivan earned ace status by downing 5 Japanese aircraft over the South Pacific in 1942 and 1943, but his adventures were only beginning. On September 20, 1943, O'Sullivan's P-38 fighter was shot down, and he crashed landed in the jungle of New Guinea. After two days he entered a native village, only to flee for his life after learning that he had encountered head hunters. One month later, he finally made contact with Australian commandos and made radio contact with his unit. O'Sullivan's story was made into an acclaimed 2009 documentary film, Slightly Wounded ... Please Advise. This photo shows his plane painted with four kills, which dates it between April 12, 1943, when he downed his fourth foe, a "Betty" bomber, and July 26, when he notched his fifth, a K-43 Oscar.
