Walt Disney (1901-1966) became the leader in movie animation after his most famous character, Mickey Mouse, appeared in the successful and sound-enhanced cartoon, Steamboat Willie (1928). Disney provided Mickey's voice and featured this loveable mouse - who many considered his alter ego - in cartoon shorts, including Mickey and the Beanstalk, the animated feature, Fantasia (1940), and the television show, The Mickey Mouse Club (1955-1959). Disney, who produced his first animated feature-length cartoon, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), also made live action films, including Treasure Island (1950), and perfected the combination of animation and live action in such classics as Mary Poppins (1964). During his lifetime, his films received 29 Academy Awards, and his weekly television show, Walt Disney's Wonderful World (1954-1983), became one of the longest-running TV series.
