Sports Illustrated has survived over 6 decades primarily through its reputation for excellent writing and especially photography. In the 1980s the magazine took advantage of new technology to become the photo journal of record, acting as a chronicle of all the major cultural events, from the hockey team winning at Lake Placid (Best cover ever!) to the battles between Magic and Larry.
