REDD FOXX Original pencil drawing, inscribed by Redd in red ink to the artist, who has also signed Original Art inscribed and signed: "John this is Great/Thanks/Redd Foxx", 5½x8½. Pencil drawing also signed by the artist "Raitt". REDD FOXX (1922-1991) was arguably the most notorious "blue" comic of his day, raising the ire of censors and threatening the delicate sensibilities of mainstream American good taste. In 1970, he made his film debut in Cotton Comes to Harlem. When the film became a surprise hit, Foxx became a hot talent, and soon signed to star in Sanford and Son, as junk dealer Fred Sanford. It premiered in 1972 and became a huge hit, running through 1977. The short-lived programs Sanford, The Redd Foxx Show and The Redd Foxx Comedy Hour followed; additionally, he starred in the 1976 feature Norman, Is That You?, and became a Las Vegas headliner. JOHN RAITT began drawing portraits of famous people while attending college in the 1930s. He sent his artwork to each subject with a request that it be autographed and returned to him.
