What does her name mean? What was her mission?
Sojourner Truth’s given name was Isabella Baumfree. She was born a slave in Ulster County, New York. She became free in 1828 under a New York law that banned slavery. She was a deeply religious woman who believed that she was on a holy mission against slavery. She took the name Sojourner Truth which means "traveler." This former slave delivered her famous, "Ain’t I a Woman" speech in Akron, Ohio.

Clara Barton (1821-1912)

What role did Clara Barton assume during the Civil War?
Clara Barton was the founder of the American Red Cross. She was known as the "Angel of the Battlefield" for nursing wounded soldiers during the Civil War. When the war ended, she formed a group that searched for missing soldiers. This group marked more than 12,000 graves in the Andersonville National Cemetery in Georgia

Harriet Tubman (1820-1913)
Which "railroad" did this "conductor" work for?
Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in Bucktown, Maryland. In 1849 she escaped from slavery and went to Philadelphia via the "Underground Railroad." She had promised that she would return to Maryland to help other slaves escape. She returned 19 nineteen times during the 1850’s and helped about 300 slaves escape.
