As early as 1914 Horace and John Dodge were pioneering the standard for quality and technological advancement in the automobile industry: all-steel body construction, 12-volt electrical systems, sliding-gear transmissions and 35 horsepower engines. From this the Dodge Brothers earned a reputation for high quality parts used in many successful vehicles. The early car and light-truck lines eventually evolved through business transactions and eventual sale to Chrysler. Dodge became a player in the muscle car market with customers seeking performance vehicles with models like the Coronet R/T and Super Bee. With the introduction of the Challenger, Dodge entered the pony car class offering everything from economy engines up to a Hemi V8. Today Dodge cars and trucks are branded separately, however the Ram brand is said to always be a Dodge at heart.
