Michael Augustine Corrigan (1839-1902) was an American high-ranking clergyman with the Roman Catholic Church, serving as the third archbishop of New York City from 1885 to 1902. The son of Irish immigrants, Corrigan eventually worked his way to receive a doctorate of divinity in 1864 from the North American College in Rome and was ordained to the priesthood in 1863. He returned to America as a faculty member at Seton Hall College as a professor of theology and history, later in 1872 being named Bishop of Newark during a time of rapid population growth due to immigration from Ireland and Germany, plus major urbanization. On October 1, 1880 Corrigan was named Coadjutor Archbishop of New York, then in 1885 succeeded to the archbishopric; he played a main role in the "conservative" Catholic movement, supporting national parishes and parochial schools, and fighting against other bishops who advocated "Americanization" within the Catholic Church. He is best remembered, however, for his scandal involving Father Edward McGlynn who ran for New York City mayor in 1886, and with whom Corrigan excommunicated due personal conflicts. Irregularly cut.
