About the Appalachian Trail

The Appalachian Trail stretches 2,190 miles from it's Southern Terminus at Springer Mountain in Georgia to its Northern Terminus Mt Katahdin in Maine, crossing 14 states along the way. Famous spots along the trail include The Great Smoky Mountain National Park, The Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah National park, MacAfee's Knob in Virginia, Mount Washington in New Hampshire's White Mountains and a multitude of other spots along the way. the vision of Benton MacKeye who proposed the trail in 1921, by 1925 with growing support the Appalachian Trail Conference was formed to make the vision a reality. Through the years countless volunteers have worked to build and maintain the trail to its current state. In 2005 the Appalachian Trail Conference became the Appalachian Trail Conservancy to reflect its priority of preserving the Trail corridor and the natural and cultural resources along it.
