Received the product quickly. It worked great. I went to use it a couple of months later and had an issue. I contacted support adn it was promptly replaced. The replacement is working great. Easy to connect and great transfer rate. Nice product and great customer support from Tera Grand. I've tried a few other data transfer kits previously and they didn't last. Also USB 3 is supported on this model. Well worth the little extra bucks over the cheaper kits.

Overall I like the "Tera Grand - USB 3.0 to SATA II and IDE Hard Drive Adapter, Universal" I purchased from Tera Grand. The only negative so far is that some drives are not recognized when I connect them to my SAN using this adapter, but they are recognized by Windows if I connect them to the PC's USB. The opposite is sometime true - work when plugged into my Synology SAN, but not the PC. At least I have learned to try both before assuming the drives are bad. With that said, this one works better than another one that I have. The ability to power old drives is also a benefit.

Bought this to retrieve data off of my very old hard drives sitting around in my desk drawer for about 5 or six years. It came nicely packaged. It fit my old drives. However, the power switch kept shorting out causing the retrieval process to either stop or restart. The construction of the device was pretty cheaply done...nothing really sturdy about it. The two positive things I have to say are: 1) The return was easy; and, 2) It had a usb 3.0 (which to me is just a nice thing not a necessity). Otherwise, I bought a different one with a lower price that worked much better and was of better construction.

I received the Tera Grand USB 3.0 IDE and SATA II adapter on Feb 11. I immediately opened the package and tried to use it. Unfortunately, I didn’t have much luck. Started off hooking up a 3.5 IDE HD to USB 2.0 (adapter is backward compatible) and then turned the power on (love the on/off power switch). Initially the HD was recognized by my Vista PC although I still couldn’t access it or see data on the drive. Then without doing anything, I received an error message that the USB device was now unknown. Disconnected the device and tried again with the same error message results. Decided to try a 2.5 HD connected to a different USB 2.0 plug and received the same error message. Rebooted the PC and tried again… received the same error message. Tried on my Win 7 laptop (with both HD) and got the same results, error message that the USB device was unknown. So for me, although initially it looked good, this device was only recognized by my PC for less than 30 seconds before receiving an error. Sent back on Feb 12.

works with new drives, but purchaced to pull data off an old WD 3.5 inch drive that required a 4 pim molex connection. This device does not work with this drive at all.

I have a number of similar devices I have bought over the years. This one has a USB 3.0 interface, making it MUCH better than my older USB adapters for today's huge-capacity drives. It is also very portable, so I can easily pack it when I travel (I often get snookered into fixing computers when I visit family.)

If you are new to this, it is a small box with 3 connectors to fit large 3.5" desktop-computer drives or small 2.5" portable-computer drives of either the old "IDE" or "PATA" type or the newer "SATA" type. It connects to the computer through a USB 3.0 cable that fits the standard computer connector, either the old USB 1.1/2.0 type or the new "Superspeed" 3.0 type (Blue bar inside.)

Your bare drive now becomes available as if it were installed inside the computer. You can test it, format it, wipe it clean for disposal, store or read data from it, install programs or a complete operating system on it. You can transfer huge amounts of data to another computer. Newer computers can even boot from it. Even an old IDE drive becomes "Hot-swappable", meaning you can plug or unplug its USB connection without shutting down your computer.

CAUTION: To avoid losing data that have not been fully transferred, always use the "Safely remove hardware and eject media" feature of Windows to be sure all data transfers are completed before you unplug or shut off any external storage device.

If your computer has a USB 3.0 connector, you can transfer data as fast as your SATA I or II disk can handle it. Unfortunately, this device can't reach the full speed of the latest SATA III (SATA 6) drives, but the speed increase over the USB connection gives me MUCH faster transfers than the other adapters I have, saving hours of time.

They provide a 2A 120/240V wall-wart power supply which connects to the adapter box. Old 2.5" IDE drives and SATA drives get power and data from a single connection on the box. Older 3.5" drives which have a traditional 4-pin Molex power connector get data from the largest connector on the box, and power via a short removable adapter cable going from the box to the drive. The USB 3.0 cable is easily removable and replaceable. It has a standard USB 3.0 "B" connector on the adapter (that's the reason for the big bump atop the box), and a USB 3.0 "A" connector (USB 2.0 compatible) going to the computer.

This kind of gadget can be a lifesaver in finding a suddenly-important file in a pile of old drives, or recovering data from a crashed drive. More mundanely, you can back up huge amounts of valuable data onto very cheap compact bare drives to tuck away in your safe-deposit box (wrapped in aluminum foil and carefully labeled, of course.)

If you have read this far, you probably should have one!

I like the "all-in-one" solution this TERA GRAND USB to IDE/SATA adapter offers: no separate SATA power or data cables needed--just plug right into the adapter. Tried it with 3 different 3.5 inch IDE drives on a WinXP machine and USB 2.0. Eventually got it to read all 3 hard drives but it took some fiddling. For some reason I had to re-boot my PC for it to start working, and sometimes you need to un-plug and re-plug in the USB cable for the adapter to recognize the drive. Also, Western Digital hard drives need to be set to "Cable Select" for the adapter to recognize them. It's a little too finicky to put in my tool bag so I'll keep this one in the office and use a different adapter in my tool bag.

UPDATE 2013-10-04: Despite the issues described above I have replaced the NewerTech SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Universal Drive Adapter I kept in my tool bag with this one. Here is why: I had a Toshiba SATA drive that had a corrupted partition table. The NewerTech adapter could not handle the drive and would cyclically mount and dismount the drive endlessly, while the Tera Grand had no problem mounting the drive. I also suspect the NewerTech helped destroy the partition information due to cached writebacks.

I was skeptical at first, but it really turned out well. I was able to salvage a 2TB drive that had gone kaput due to Windows 8 shannanigans and reformat on a Windows 7 platform no problem. It lost one star on the review because the power adaptor for older drive is too short for some older drives. It's a design flaw because the adaptor is square and has onnectors on 4 sides. If your older drive is connected opposite the power intake, the cable does not reach the hard drive. You need either to get an extension (not supplied) or adapt the one provided.
