Great shoes, run big!

Great shoes, run big!
I neede a pair of hiking shoes for a weekend trip but don’t feel like packing my heavy hiking boots. So Amazon to the rescue. I couldn’t decide on this Salomon and Merrell siren edge, so I got both to try on. To my surprise, both size 8 look about a full size different! In fact, the UK equivalent size was 5.5 for Merrell and 6.5 for Salomon. I tried Salomon on. It’s heavenly. So cushy and comfy with great arch support. Unfortunately, it’s too big and seems more bulky and manly than the Merrell. So I think I’m going to keep the more feminine Merrell with real shoe lace (and fits me well) and send back the heavenly cushy Salomon. If I had more time, I probably would have exchanged for a smaller size of Salomon. Maybe some day...

*Update 2/24/2016 Seems my pair just needed a period of breaking in, both shoes fit great now, with regular socks or hiking socks. The quick laces still work fine and show no signs of deterioration. I've been wearing these more often than my regular street shoes as I'm seriously impressed with the durability, comfort, and quality. Despite the heavy use (walking on pavement, walking through fields, muddy/wet back country, and dry/rocky desert they are still in great condition. I'm pretty confident that when these need replacing I will buy another pair of Salomon shoes.

Original review: These are my first pair of Salomon hiking shoes. I ordered my normal shoe size, an 8.5, and when I first tried the shoes on I had mixed feelings ~the right shoe felt super comfy but the left shoe made my arch a little sore after taking just a few steps around the room. I tried adjusting the tightness of the laces but to no avail. It then occurred to me that it would probably be ideal to use hiking socks then crossed my fingers that would alleviate my discomfort because I really needed these shoes to work out for a fast approaching backpacking trip. I do not own hiking socks but figured they couldn't be much different from my boot socks which just seem like really thick socks. So for a quick fix I doubled up on my no show No Nonsense socks for a little extra padding...low and behold it fixed my sore left arch problem. *I did not wear my wool boot socks because it's summer time. My 2 mile hike the next day was super comfortable, I had no soreness in either foot. at all. The tread on these are awesome they bite into the ground giving good traction when crossing dusty gravel, moss covered forest floor, boulders, sandy river banks, semi dry mud, and even wet river rocks. Didn't even bother changing my shoes when we set up base camp because they were just that comfortable.

When I ordered these, the descriptions for some specified "quick laces" while others did not. I thought mine would come with regular laces because it did not specify otherwise. However, upon arrival I was surprised to find quick laces on the shoes and no regular laces in sight. I had never used quick laces before but found I liked them for the most part because it makes it super easy to put on/take off the shoes, quickly/easily adjustable, and I didn't have any issues with them budging/sliding during the time that I wore them. However, I did encounter a minor issue...tho it may have simply been users error....when I was scrambling up a steep riverbank, the top loop of the quick lace (the part with the toggle that aids in adjustments) got caught on a root that was sticking out. Very inconvenent to say the least when you're precariously perched on unstable ground and the only hand hold is just out of your reach. This may have been avoided had I simply tucked the excess into the side...though I'm not sure they would stay that way over the course of the day. The quick laces also seem very thin which makes me question their durability. For the price you'd think it would come with a set of regular laces in case the wearer wanted to swap them out hence the 4 star. I'd rate them more like a 4.5 star if I could.

Overall I'm very happy with this purchase as these seem well made but will have to follow up down the road after they've seen some more action in the PNW.

Happy trails

UPDATE May 9, 2019. These were a great pair of shoes, that had a long well worn life. They were recycled about a year ago. While this brand is a little more expensive than what I am used to, they were totally worth it. These survived longer than any of my other outdoor athletic shoes. Will definitely buy again in the near future

This is my first pair of Salomon shoes. I didn't have a chance to break them in before an overseas trip, but they were comfortable when I tried them on, so I took them hoping for the best. There is much to like about them, though I'm not convinced they make my feet happy enough (may just be my picky feet). At first, these shoes seem larger than expected, but after wearing them several times, I think the fit is as expected. I wear size 8 and ordered size 8. They fit with regular socks, but you could also wear thicker hiking socks. There does seem to be some extra room in the heel, which was frustrating, but I do appreciate the extra room in the tox box. The quicklaces allow you to easily adjust the size based on wearing thicker socks, or adding insoles. I would prefer regular laces though, as I was having some trouble with the quicklaces loosening too easily, but once I got them adjusted they seemed to stay tight. The soles/balls of my feet were a little sore after walking in them for a few hours, but otherwise the overall comfort was excellent. If you're looking for a softer, squishier footbed with a lot of arch support, these may not work for you. I walked in some deep slushy snow for about an hour, and my feet stayed dry.

Pros:
sturdy, waterproof, streamlined attractive style, roomy fit/able to wear regular or thicker socks and adjust fit accordingly with laces
Cons:
loose in ankle, may need a good bit of breaking in

Shoes seem promising so far, but I have to return size 9 to get a smaller size. I have the XA Comp 5 in size 9 from a few years ago, which fit just right with thin socks. These shoes, however, are too large with thinnish socks (closer to standard thickness than to thin). The heel cup especially is too large. I do have somewhat wide feet and sometimes do better in a wide-width shoe, so I'm surprised at how large these run. Not sure yet if I will need an 8.5 or an 8.
Update: The size 8.5 seemed right for me, but after wearing the shoes for a day, I discovered that the ankle collar on one shoe was too small, and the inner part was angled inward too much, causing irritation and soreness. Am returning this pair, and hoping the next pair of size 8.5 will work for me.

Sizing: Based on other reviews I bought both my size (10) and a half size down (9.5). I am consistently a size 10 in pretty much all shoes except in running shoes...I wear a 10.5. I was surprised that the 9.5 fit so well. I didn't even bother trying on the size 10. They would have been way too big. At first I even thought the 9.5 may be a teeny bit roomy but I don't think I could have gone any smaller. I tried adding a gel insert but that was too big and raised my foot to high out of the bed causing the back to slip. So I tried a "anti stink" insert...pretty flat and this made the shoe perfect. I wear these shoes with my everyday ankle running socks and they fit great. I tried them on with my smartwool socks as well (M weight) and they fit slightly more snug but perfectly comfortable. They have a higher ankle line than a regular running shoe...which took a little getting used to but has not been a problem...and now I barely notice it.
Looks: I bought them in teal and they are beautiful. I love the color! They don't look to bulky. Very sporty...I think they are very attractive, and look good with hiking skorts, and tights (I personally don't like the way hiking boots look with skorts...so this is prob just my personal preference)...but basically they are very versatile.
Performance: Since I bought these about a week ago I have hiked close to 15 miles (level/incline moderate-difficult). No blisters or weird rub spots...very comfy, supportive and great grip. I have not tested their waterproof-ness but my husband has had his for several years and they deflect water well, and have held up to miles of hiking in the Colorado Rockies.
Overall: I am very happy with these shoes thus far. I hope they hold up, and I am seriously considering getting the pink pair as well:)

When I read that these shoes were comfortable without a break-in period, I was sceptical but hopeful. Completely surprised that they are, in fact, completely comfortable. I haven't tried out their waterproofness yet, but I am liking these shoes so far otherwise! The footbed is really nice-great arch support, easy to tighten comfortably, easy to put on and take off, and great traction.

Erster Eindruck:

Nachtrag erfolgt garantiert.
