Resurrected a a pair of Sony MDR-CD5 headphones!

Resurrected a a pair of Sony MDR-CD5 headphones!
I am so happy right now, I could cry. :-D I have a pair of Sony MDR-CD5 headphones. These were available from about 1983-1986. Easily Googled. Somewhat legendary cans. The first headphones Sony came out with after CD hit, and they were advertised as "digital", and having higher resolution for that format. The pads weren't replaceable (they were glued on to each ear housing, on-ear headphones and pads), and they had disintegrated years ago. I bought some pads on Amazon or ebay advertised as fitting them, but I knew even before trying them, that they weren't going to work. They were smaller "comfies" (like Grado) that fit over each ear piece. No low end, really, and they sounded bad, and were a waste of money. So I put the Sony's away, and started buying new headphones. Did indeed find a few I liked, and many I didn't.So I tried again just recently. And *somewhere* I saw mention that these would fit the Sony's. Got them today, took about 10 min to install them both. The plastic insert goes in front of each ear housing, and you wrap the "rubber" lip around to the back. (I get the impression I had a much easier time than actually putting them on the Bose headphones they're made for. ;-) ) I spent the next hour listening to whole YouTube videos, just smiling, and smiling, and smiling. (Young Man Blues by the Who, at Tanglewood. My Generation from the London Coliissuem. No Quarter by Led Zeppelin from the Song Remains the Same. Highway Star and Strange Kind of Woman from Made in Japan by Deep Purple.) I have *never* just watched videos for their sound on YouTube before for a straight hour. I *remembered* these headphones sounding really great. And that's really even before I knew what I liked and didn't like as far as headphones go. The great sound quality I remembered is back! A powerful bottom end yet distinct, precise, and not overblown (like so many cans today). A detailed and forward midrange. And laid back but clear highs. Oh baby. I'm going to now order another set of these just so I have them. Incidentally, I put maybe 4 other prospective sets of pads into my cart, and for some reason, I decided to get the Geekria's first. I'm done, I can stop here. These are great sounding pads with the Sony MDR-CD5's.The picture isn't great, but it gives you an idea!

When one my Bose On-Ear OE2i ear pads came apart I knew I could purchase a set of replacement ear pads from Bose. I also knew they were more than I wanted to pay. So, I searched around and finally settled on these OE2(i) replacement pads by Geekria. I have a few comments. First, the packaging for the earpads was not what I expected. They came well packaged in a round cardboard canister that included the earpads and instructions for fitting them on the Bose over ear headphones. Second, getting the first ear pad on was a bit dicey. The instructions were helpful to a point, but it takes a certain amount of patience and "feel" to get the ear pad on the headphone. But, my patience was rewarded. It took me a couple of tries but once I got the technique down the first ear pad went one nicely. When it was on, it took a bit more fiddling to make sure it was seated properly. That done, the 2nd ear pad when on in less than a minute. Third, regarding the quality of Geekria's ear pads was better than I expected. These ear pads are similar to Bose's in fit and finish with a couple of differences, the moleskin is slightly, very slightly, more stiff and because of that they allow a slight bit better air flow and thus don't find my ears getting as sweaty when it's warm. That may sound odd but I found that with the Bose originals my ears were almost always sweaty. In addition, the foam padding is a just a bit more stiff. For me, the slight extra stiffness coupled with the slightly stiffer mole skin makes for a better fit on my ears. Finally, I like them so much I plan to order another pair as a backup. These headphones aren't super expensive, but they are more than adequate for my needs and the sound quality is holding up well. With good ear pads, the headphones are almost unusable, so investing a another set just makes sense to me.

My frustration here is with Bose. Am sure they don't want you to replace anything- just buy new again. Received these pads in an unmarked white box. Pieces aren't marked with oe2 or anything and after 1/2 hr screwing around I was sure I had the wrong parts. No instructions. Came with the little yellow plastic do-dad and a piece of paper with a web address. Found the OE2 video there and sorry- but video looked ridiculously easy compared to real life. The video never used the yellow do-day or referenced it. Eventually got the material into the tiny groove. It doesn't look great or even all around but screwing around more doesn't make it look any better. Was worried about the thin material that has to be pulled and stretched then crammed into fit into the little space - but my hat is off to the maker of these buds. the Material never tore which I was sure would happen. Extended the life of the headphones which are still fine. Spent way too much time but the 2nd one was quicker. Better than buying new

Took a few minutes to finesse these on but they look great and fit perfectly. I removed the hard plastic insert and swapped the crappy foam these came with with the original memory foam.

Junk. I want my money back! I would give it zero stars if I could. Did not fit. They were so tight that they ripped while I was trying to put them on. That's how tight they are. So now I have three ripped earphone pads (original and two replacements).

Bad construction controls. Bad return policy.

I thought they were easy to install - I probably spent between 10-15 minutes to install them. The main reason I picked these over original Bose ear cushions was that the color matched the color of the original ear pads (gray). The Bose website only had black cushions. (This headset is not a noise cancelling headset which is why I didn't rate them for noise cancellation.) I would say that the quality of the ear pads are roughly equivalent to the Bose brand name ear pads.
