I received six of them and placed them in a few of the houses. I was careful not to let them run every night before Christmas, because I didn't want them to burn out before everyone arrived for the Christmas Day party.
Auto Shut Off after 9 Hours - Yes, this worked. They shut off after 9 hours one night. They do not turn back on, so be prepared to click them all back on yourself when you are ready. (They aren't 9 on, 15 hours off - like some battery candles, for example.)
Don't run them throughout the holidays if you want them to last. Even after only turning them on for 4 evenings and turning them off myself before the 9 hours were up on 3 of those nights, the lights were very dim by Christmas. It's a shame they don't last longer. They take 4 batteries each, that's 2 more than the holiday candles I bought, yet the holiday candles are still shining bright after glowing every night since the day after Thanksgiving.
Basically, they are better than nothing. I tried not to compare them to using the electrical cords, because obviously, there is more power in a direct electrical connection. But even when compared to battery-operated candles, they don't hold up very well. It would be nice if they the glowed stronger and for much longer. (It would also be nice if they had an internal timer for shutting off AND turning on, but that's a recommendation and not a review of what is offered.)
Note: The first three photos are from the first night I put the lights in the houses. The final one is from today (post Christmas). As you can see, they start off pretty bright. When I went to turn them off Christmas night, I could barely tell which one's had lights in them.
Suggestion: To make up for the fading lights, I ordered little battery-operated fairy lights and placed them behind the village. That helped the village look beautiful for our Christmas party. You can see them in the final picture.
Overall review, good but not great. The Dept. 56 villages are not cheap, and it would be nice to have a better battery-operated option for lighting them up.
