The origins of Bosch as a supplier of automotive equipment go back to 1887 when Robert Bosch and his engineer, Gottlob Honold, built a product that would later revolutionize the automotive industry – a magneto ignition device for a stationary engine. In 1897, he installed one of these devices into a three-wheeler vehicle to see whether it was suitable for everyday use in motor vehicles. What was initially a small sideline product has since grown to become the company’s largest business sector.
