I would suggest 38X32 or 40X32. Wash them in warm or hot water, put in dryer, and then wear.

I buy my husband a size bigger to allow for extra clothing especially in winter and also when the get washed they may shrink up a little but they do stretch back out when worn.

buy the next size up from your normal waist size, overalls should be loose and comfortable

To correctly size bibs, you should order them 3 sizes larger, due to shrinkage. THis holds most true for Dickies brand bibs.

I would think you should go to a 38x30 in a bib overalls. You want them a little loose around the waist so you can bend over without them pinching your waist.

I wear a 34 waist in pants but go with a 40" waist on these. Not too big when new, not too small when they've been around a while and have shrunk.

Unlike pants where you measure at the waist, you should measure at your "Belly Button" to get a comfortable fit. 
In regard to the inseam, I found that ordering two-three inches less than normally worn is a good starting point.

You can get Carhart overalls with zippers on the sides of the legs but they are insulated...but you can't get Carharts from Walmart. Just google Carharts and you can find where to buy them.

If you buy the insulated bib overalls they have the zipper on the leg. The unlined ones do NOT have zippers on the leg. Carhartt does but they are SO expensive

Mostly see that in the insulated bibs that are meant to go over your street clothes.

I suggest you go with your normal inseam but bump the waist size up a couple. They'll shrink. As they lose some in the length, just adjust the straps.

They will be far too long for you. I am 5'7" and ordered 30" length and mine were about 3-4 inches too long for me.

Have been buying these for 30 years - and only needed about 10 pair. They last and get better with age. And when the knees wear out they make GREAT shorts. Lots of compliments.

Classic and still the best

The coveralls fit great. We got a size larger to assure plenty of room. My husband loved them.

Great fabric and pocket configuration   One complaint. Sizing. It's never quite the same and I buy a pair every year. 38/32 was perfect three years ago. Last year same order is two inches short. I adjust and the most recent purchase at 38/34 is way too long.  I'll have to get them hemmed.

Size irregularities

These are the worst overalls I have ever purchased. I can't recommend them to anyone. after wearing them three times they ripped out in the hip. The material is very thin and they seem to have a bad design at the hip area.

Tore out hip on 3rd day of use!
