The best mat this teacher has ever found!!
As an instructor I see and have tried a lot of different brands. I've watched students who think that their super thick and stretchy mat would protect their joints, and tried to explain that a sturdy mat that doesn't slip beneath them was much better and would help improve their practice. I'd let them try mine to see the difference. And I've always stated faithful to my trust mandukas. But while trying to find a mat with a bit more length that my husband could use for home practice I discovered Kurma Yoga. I was certain that I would stay faithful to my pro mat and give him this 'other' one, but I wasn't able to do that. I had to keep it for my daily practicing and teaching.Once I unrolled it I realized the quality I had happened upon. It was thick, cushioned my joints and while it was heavier than most lesser brands, it felt substantial when I stepped onto it. I did mostly follow the pre-cleaning instructions to help for grip, but once I had gotten it soapy I added a step and also sprinkled course sea salt onto it and lightly scrubbed that around. I rinsed, I dried, I carried inside, and unrolled it for a trial run. And here's where I fell in love.My shins, my palms and my knees sent up a chorus of Aaaaahhhh in child's pose. And as I tried a variety of poses I found myself smiling. Cushion, yes. Traction, yes (it's still breaking in so I know it will improve the more I use it!). Length, double yes! As Imoved through my practice it did not. It stayed in place and kept me going.My hubby gets my manduka and I get my Kurma. I can't wait to see where it takes me. And if you're wondering about spending the money, or maybe are just starting out with your yoga or Pilates practice, a good mat really makes all the difference. Get this and it will work with you and improve with you. And, if initial quality is any indication, this will be the last mat you'll need to buy!

For years I used a cheap mat - I never thought the mat would make that much of a difference - boy was I wrong.
This mat improved my down dog - I could not believe it the first time. I can get longer and much more stable. I use a towel on it so can not speak to the sticky performance but can say that my towel does not budge at all on this mat. It also stays put on the hard wood floor of studio, no more surfing around the floor on my mat.
It's solid and supportive.
I have sensitive knees and used to have to use a blanket for padding on even the shortest duration positions on knees. For extended positions on knees, I still need a blanket but no longer for all of them.
I am 5'10" and this is the perfect length - I'm always on my mat and never run out of room. I almost did not buy because width is not as wide as some other options out there but can honestly say - it is perfect.
It is heavy - even knowing the weight specs before purchase did not prepare me for the first time I lifted it but how else can you get that kind of support without the density this mat provides?
I am extremely satisfied with my purchase and recommend this mat to anyone looking for length, support and stability at a reasonable price.

I am extremely pleased with this yoga mat! I am a yoga and pilates instructor, and have been using Manduka and Prana yoga mats most recently. The Kurma Yoga mat is now my go to mat for all practices and I feel it is a superior product to the Manduka and Prana mats mainly due to its durability, grip, and dimensions. The major reasons I find this to be the best mat available are:
1. Super grippy, no need to worry about slipping out of postures even in a heated practice.
2. Cushiony under boney areas, for me most mats are uncomfortable when I am kneeling, this mat feels great. The thickness is perfect.
3. Perfect dimensions, it is nice and long but not too wide so you aren't taking up too much real estate. Also is a good weight for going to and from the studio or traveling.
4. No rubber smell.
5. Eco-friendly and durable, will last forever, and if not the company backs it.
6. Simple, clean, and elegant mat.
All around this is the perfect mat and you will need to look no further!

Overall, I am very pleased with this mat. I am tall, about 5'10", so I really needed a yoga mat that was long enough, and this one does the trick. It also has a great grip, without being too rubbery, and it's very comfortable and supportive for floor stretch poses (like yoga pigeon pose, for example, which usually hurts my ankle bone if I'm using a thinner mat). This mat gives the perfect amount of cushion without being "spongy".
My only complaint is that this mat is very heavy, which is something I don't think the manufacturer could have avoided. For someone who likes to bike or walk to yoga class, it's definitely cumbersome. It weighs probably 3 times as much as a regular yoga mat. But if you are someone who drives a lot, and you want something that has great grip, support, and feels like it will last you forever, this is the mat for you.

When I first received this mat I did wipe it down with a little soap and water, the mat does not have a strong odor. When I used this mat in yoga it was very slippery. I naturally have sweaty hands and I had trouble getting a grip in downward dog. I had to place a towel down where my hands were. I read reviews that the mat gets stickier the more you use it and I have not been seeing this happen. I have noticed that at the end of class when I am sweaty my feet start to slide on the mat as well. This can be dangerous if you slip.
I do go to bikram yoga as well and I would not be comfortable using this mat in there because of how slippery it is. I wanted to avoid buying a mat towel but it looks like I may have to.
The site also advertised a free yoga strap with purchase, I emailed amazon and they told me to purchase both product and they would reimburse me for the strap.
I do not know for sure yet if I recommend this product to another person, and I know for sure I would not purchase this again. Maybe if you have less sweaty hands and feet this would be perfect for you, but this product is not for me.

After a long research decided to buy this yoga mat. I am a former Ashtanga yogi, now I am 7-month pregnant with our first baby. I have bought this mat more than 5 months ago and I really wanted to give it a chance! But it's too slippery. Especially now, when I am 7-month pregnant it just drives me crazy! I slip all the time in down-dog even though I haven't slipped ever even on the cheapest yoga mats! And I can't say I sweat very much.

I tried to clean it several times with salt as per instruction. Then I used soapy water but it didn't work.

I really like the thickness, length, and eco-friendly materials...but it's too slippery. I have never expected such an expensive mat to be soooo disappointing.

Any suggestions on grip problem? Otherwise, I don't know what to do with this mat. I don't want to spend another $90 on a mat that might be as slippery as this one.
