First of all you get what you pay for. I originally received a Rugged Ridge fuel door for Christmas, and it did look like a quality piece. Out of the box, I could tell that it was not going to fit as well or have the same look I was going for.
I bought the MOPAR fuel door for about twice the price of the Rugged Ridge unit. It was worth every penny! The matte finish looks great on JK, not shinny at all. The faux billeted screws are a nice touch. The install is easy; disconnect the left rear tail light, depress four clips and push the old fule fastener out. The new door fits right in and sits perfectly flush! This could have come stock on the Jeep. Along with the MOPAR slush mats and door sills, I think these are great add-ons for a Jeep.
While I'm at it, a couple of removal tips. The instructions are just silly pictures, this should help: As far as the taillights are concerned, the instructions look like you have to remove all the 4 screws, you only have to remove the 2 inboard screws. Also, don't try to push the filler in like the instructions seem to show, it won't move and will just frustrate you. Better to just pull the old opening out. The rubber gasket will come off the filler tube no problem.
More money than the other ones, but this one is a perfect fit ( no gap) now. I say pay a little more and get the real deal.
Step 5: Picture shows hand reaching in to support removal. here is what I recommend:
-> Remove inner seal (I think this is what they are trying to show in step 7). Picture shows doing this with your hand. Good luck.
Save yourself some hassle and use a pair of needle nose pliers and a flat head screwdriver. That seal is in there pretty good.
I used the flat head screwdriver to assist the transition of the seal over the gas tube lip while pulling with the needle nose
pliers at different points around the gas tube.
-> unsnap the upper and lower snaps from the back side. You cant reach around to the other 2 snaps. Don't even try.
Push out from the back slightly and you will see the plastic alignment pin pop out of the hole. Now keep slight pressure on the
back and rotate clockwise until the next snap comes around to you. Unsnap it and the housing should pop on out.
Step 12: Do this at step 8. You want to install the seal first to the new housing.
-> Do this before you install the new housing. Install the seal removed to the new housing. Spit on the inner diameter of the seal
for lubricant. Insert the new housing with the alignment pin at the top and it will snap right in. Your seal, if lubricated, should of
slid in place as well. If not just run your finger around it until it contacts the gas tube properly.
I am not sure what Mopar was thinking when they put these instructions together. Well, there was a heads up when I took off the taillight. these guys are supposed to know manufacturing but they use two different size screws (thickness) on the taillight. Be aware of which ones go where. I did this a few weeks ago, so I can't remember if the bigger screws went on the inside or the outside. You just need to be aware that they are different.
Hope this helps.
