It has 6-axis color tweaking and many gamma and color temperature options. You can, without doubt, make this monitor look how you want it to look. Coming from 2 previous CCFL displays, I was used to that color spectrum. In short, it can be tweaked any way you would want it.
Now, I did have some problems. 3 things can happen, none of which I have with the current unit thankfully:
1) Noise from power supply. I'm sensitive to that high pitch and I know it well. None present with this unit.
2) Flickering from faulty/loose DVI port. This has been reported on the PA-248's and I did have it happen with a unit which was sent back. Moving to DisplayPort has been reported to solve this issue. I am using the DisplayPort and so far no flickering. I used the DVI for a day or two and that was also stable.
3) Backlight bleed. First unit returned also had excessive bleed at the bottom corners which almost whited/bleed out a large section at each corner when in use. There is no real way to fix that kind of bleed. The light simply bleeds out and over the panel (loose layers inside the panel, warped, etc. it doesn't take much..) Almost all monitors have a little bleed but the key is how much is visible when using in applications / gaming. You'll see an area of the screen which is lighter / whiter than it should be, etc. and very noticeable.
I returned the first unit and was sent a replacement which had a vertical green line down the center of the entire monitor!! This can happen when they are dropped or exposed to a magnet etc. Again, sent that back.. These were bought from a competitor. Think eggs.. Not here. Still, and I'm glad I did, decided to try one more shot, 3rd time's the charm, etc. and was sent a good one.
So as one review said, they seem to have quality issues. Check for these things, especially bleed and use the DVI for a few days and look for flickering - the screen will actually go completely black for a few seconds. For $500, you should not settle for a problem. There are good units of these out there. And the high-pitch on the power supply.
In sum, it's awesome provided you get a solid one. The color and brightness is incredible and the difference from CCFL is so clear to me now, not to mention less heat by far and a longer display life. CCFL's dim over time. Also, 1920x1200 which is standard for me, is just excellent. 16:10 is the best.
I also get the infamous high pitch power supply whine, but only when I turn the display off using the front button, while leaving the rear-bottom power supply switch on. While the monitor is actually being used, I don't notice any noise. To me, this is a very unprofessional characteristic. Also, note well, I am using an uninterruptible power supply with power conditioning, so this does not seem to be a dirty-power issue.
But I am still thankful to Asus for making such a great 10-bit display at such a good price, so I am willing to go to the trouble of reaching my arm into a strange u-shape to get to the that switch every time I power it down.
Still, these stories about the poor customer service are not encouraging. Asus should be sending out replacements, or at least replacement power supplies with instructions, if it is possible to replace it ourselves, or perhaps sending out rebates to people with this issue. The simple fact is, their website says that this was built for the professional environment, and that is simply false, even though it does its job well as a monitor.
